The EMU

Iconic Structural Delivery for the New Western Sydney International Airport

OVERVIEW

The EMU is a 40-metre-tall architectural steel landmark located at the entry to the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport at Badgerys Creek.

4EVA Energy (Infrastructure Division) was engaged to deliver critical components of the structure’s fabrication, lifting, positioning, and integration, operating within one of Australia’s most complex and high-visibility construction environments.

Our team worked within tight engineering tolerances, stringent safety controls, multi-contractor interfaces, and airport-grade compliance requirements — delivering a structure designed not only as a landmark, but as a statement of precision engineering excellence.

The EMU

Scope of Work

  • Structural steel assembly and preinstallation verification
  • Complex cranage logistics for 40metre vertical lift operations
  • Multistage erecting and tensioning sequences
  • Integration of fabricated components with base plates and engineered footings
  • Onsite welding, bolting and structural alignment
  • Compliance to airport safety, exclusion zones and logistics controls
  • Coordination with civil, electrical, façade and engineering teams
  • Night and low impact work windows due to surrounding program constraints
  • Evidence capture, QA documentation and handover packs

Key Outcomes

  • Successful installation of a 40 metre steel structure with zero safety incidents
  • Millimetre accurate alignment confirmed through digital measurement
  • Seamless collaboration with Tier1 contractors, airport authority and precinct engineers
  • Efficient sequencing to meet strict airport development timelines
  • Full QA documentation, weld records, bolt torque testing, NDT and handover reports
  • Enhanced site safety through controlled lifting, exclusion zone management and engineered lift plans
  • Final structure delivered as a signature entry statement for the new airport precinct

Why 4EVA Was Selected

  • High‑risk work license capability (rigging, dogging, crane operation)
  • RIW‑certified teams
  • Licensed operators for EWP/Telehandler/Forklift
  • Qualified welders and boilermakers for structural integration
  • Safety‑first major project capability
  • Experience coordinating heavy lift and multidiscipline teams
  • Strong reputation for precision, compliance and safety governance
  • Deep knowledge of high risk civil and infrastructure environments
  • Ability to deliver iconic structures within Tier1 construction frameworks
  • Transparent QA processes supported by enterprise grade evidence capture

Compliance & Evidence

All works were delivered under rigorous QA and WHS frameworks, including:

  • Lift studies and engineered cranage plans
  • NDT (NonDestructive Testing)
  • Weld mapping and inspection
  • High tensile bolt torque testing
  • Asbuilt verification
  • Daily WHS and risk briefings
  • Photo and video evidence logs

Audit ready documentation was provided to the principal contractor and airport authority as part of the final turnover pack.
